Following seven years of service in the role of Head Coach Alasdair Sutherland has decided to take a well deserved break. Members will be well aware of and grateful for the tremendous service that Al has provided over the years. She Hodgson, familiar to many in the swimming pool - juniors in particular - has also decided to take a brief break. We wish them both well and hope to see them back in some capacity in 2025.
The club is fortunate to have a number of coaches and we are lucky that Jacqui White has agreed to take on the role of Acting Head Coach. Jacqui, a BTA Level 2 coach, will be assisted by Shan Buss, David Potts and Dan Cole. We are in the process of adding to the coaching roster so look out for announcements of exciting additions to the team in coming months.
In Shan, David, Dan and Jacqui, the club has a lean but incredibly dedicated team of coaches who are passionate about supporting members to achieve their goals. And with She, Alasdair and Leon very kindly continuing to share their expertise in the background, and some very exciting new coaches coming on board, we really believe there are some great times ahead for TRISudbury!
Putting together the schedule for the next few months has not been without its challenges. British Triathlon has introduced new coaching guidance which means we need at least two coaches at every session. While this means we will be providing safer sessions with more hands-on coaching, it does stretch the coaching team quite thinly.
We really need members to support our coaching sessions to ensure they continue. Of course, this means they need to be fun, effective, well-executed sessions that add value to your training so please do talk to the coaching team about any suggestions or feedback that might help us better meet your needs and entice you along to more sessions.
With all that in mind, our plan through to half term in October is all about ‘fewer things, better’
Shan and David are continuing with their very popular junior fitness sessions on Thursday evenings. We are moving to the Stevenson Centre in Cornard, CO10 0WD to give us more flexibility around indoor and outdoor spaces as the weather changes and have one final site visit tomorrow to firm this up.
Now the clocks have gone back and evenings are darker coached run sessions have been suspended. They have been by a social run, meet at the Stevenson Centre at 6.00 on Thursdays for 30 or 40 minutes of gentle running around Cornard and Sudbury.
Very excitingly - strength and conditioning is back! David will be leading S&C sessions after the run and juniors on Thursday nights. BT rules state that we do need to tell you that these are conducted under David’s (extensive) external qualifications as an S&C Coach and personal trainer, but trust me – your muscles won’t know the difference!
Junior and adult swim sessions continue on Saturday afternoons at Cornard Leisure Centre’s heated outdoor pool.
We one session for Juniors, 3.15 to 3.55. A responsible adult should be in attendance.
For Adults we offer a “drop-in” session from 3.15 to 4.15 (on pool deck at 3.00). An eight week course, starting 2nd November, to improve swim efficiency follows this from 4.15 to 5.15. The course is suitable for all levels and will involve filming each swimmer and then working with them to develop a personalised set of drills and swim sets to help improve efficiency over 200 to 400 metres.
We are very aware of how keen our tadpoles are to get back in the water and we are working hard to make this happen. Unfortunately, these sessions will be on hold for a bit longer, but we are aiming to get them up and running again after half term, if not sooner.
Cyclists - our regular Saturday morning social ride normally starts at the Bull in Long Melford. Saturday 30th November will see us starting from the Bull at 8.30 for a 16 mile loop through the Belchamp Valley at the pace of the slowest rider.
Runners - We are taking a short break from Parkrun tourism although there is likely to be a club presence at Great Cornard. As formal run training has temporarily been suspended we are offering a social run on at 6.00pm on Thursday evenings. Meet at the Stevenson Centre for 30 to 40 minutes ahead of S&C.
Swimmers - now we are into the colder part of the year interest in social swimming has waned but we plan to return to Gosfield Lake, and the Snack Shack afterwards, on Tuesday evenings after Easter.
Our BTF qualified coaches offer a range of training sessions across the three disciplines of triathlon as well as the strength and conditioning that provides an important foundation for all triathletes. Sessions are designed to cater for all capability levels and always involve a good dose of social interaction. Sessions are available for members only, but anyone contemplating joining the club can book in for a free trial session by emailing membership@trisudbury.com
See club calendar page for details of sessions. Below is an example agenda.
